THE CONFLUENCE OF GREAT MINDS AND LEADERS
The Opoku Ware School Alumni Association in the United States, AKATAKYIE USA, is gearing up for yet another memorable reunion of Akatakyie on Labor Day weekend, from August 30 to September 1, 2019 in East Hartford, Connecticut. The 2019 Reunion will be a confluence of great minds and leadership on the theme, “Growing the Opoku Ware School Endowment for Excellence”.
This 2019 Reunion promises to be one for the history books, because for the first time, the distinguished Chairman of the occasion would be supported by five highly accomplished Co-Chairs. The Chairman for this year’s event would be in the person of Katakyie Sandy Osei- Agyemang (B87), CEO of SLID Industries Limited. Sandy has over 43 years of experience as a banker, industrialist/entrepreneur and consultant. The five Co-Chairs will include Honorary Katakyie Dr. Gregory Gelles (X176), Professor and Chair of Economics at Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla, MO; Katakyie Gilbert Addo (H97), CEO of L&A Associates in Hartford, CT; Katakyie Dr. John Oduro Boateng (W128), CEO and Director, St. LukemHospital, Ghana and Emmanuel Eye Medical Center, Accra, Ghana.
He is also the Africa Regional Coordinator of Luke Society and the founder and Board Chairman of Amantin and Kasei Community Bank in Ghana; Katakyie Dr. Kofi Atta-Mensah (G104), CEO of Ashanti Medical Associates, LLC, in Hartford, CT; and Katakyie John Akwasi Nuamah (X12), Director, Department of Urban Roads, Ghana’s Ministry of Roads and Highways, Accra, Ghana. These leaders bring to the table gravitas and inspiration for our Dinner-Dance-Fundraising Event.
In line with the theme, the 2019 Reunion will feature, as a Special Guest of Honor, a visionary leader with a genuine understanding of what Ghana needs for her growth and development. In examining the landscape for a leader who embodies the spirit of entrepreneurship, creativity, innovation and progressive aspirations, AKATAKYIE USA overwhelmingly recognized the distinct prominence of Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom. Dr. Nduom will briefly address the audience on Ghana’s march towards excellence in education using the strong government-alumni partnerships and challenge the audience to contribute towards the Opoku
Ware School Endowment Fund. Dr. Nduom is the President and Chairman of Groupe Nduom, a multi-national business group, comprising business and social enterprises in Hospitality, Banking, Insurance, Media, Technology, Manufacturing, and Investment in Africa, Europe, and the USA. His experience includes positions with Deloitte and Touche, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Milwaukee Metropolitan
Sewerage District.
For the first time also, a special Thanksgiving Mass would be held as part of the celebratory events associated with AKATAKYIE USA Reunions. This event would be held at the St. Isaac Jogues Ghanaian Catholic Parish in East Hartford CT, by the resident Pastor, Rev. Father Paul Baffuor Awuah. He would be joined by the current Chaplain of Opoku Ware School, Rev. Father Charles Addai – Kankam, and the Legendary Choir Master of Opoku Ware
School, Pious Wiafe Akenten (Afro Pa of Opoku Ware fame).
The main activities for the grand weekend durbar of AKATAKYIE USA would include, a welcome networking session on Friday evening in the beautiful mountains of Coventry, CT; a Business Meeting of AKATAKYIE USA on Saturday morning; a Dinner-Dance Fundraising Event on Saturday night; Thanksgiving Church service on Sunday, which would be climaxed with an all-inclusive Picnic at the beautiful Wickham Park Gardens.
