PROF. NANA ABA APPIAH AMFO ELEVATED FROM PRO-VICE CHANCELLOR FOR UG ACADEMICS AND STUDENTS’ AFFAIRS TO ACTING VICE-CHANCELLOR OF UG

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Amfo

Nana Aba Appiah Amfo (born 30 September 1971) is a Ghanaian Linguist, University Administrator, and currently the acting Vice-Chancellor at the University of Ghana. Until her appointment, she was the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academics and Students Affairs at the University of Ghana in West Africa.

Nana Aba Appiah Amfo had her early education at University Primary School (KNUST Basic School), Services Primary School at Takoradi, and Goldfields School Complex in Tarkwa. She attended Holy Child School for her O’ Level education and later attended Archbishop Porter Girls’ Secondary School for her A’ Level.

She proceeded to the University of Ghana for a Bachelor’s degree in French and Linguistics. She completed the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway in 2001 with an MPhil degree in Linguistics and acquired a Ph.D. degree in 2007 from the same university in Linguistics.

Amfo began her career as a Lecturer at the Department of Linguistics at the University of Ghana in 2001. After leaving to pursue further studies in Norway, she returned to Ghana and continued lecturing at the University of Ghana.

She was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 2007, the same year she obtained her Ph.D. She became an Associate Professor in 2011, and Professor in 2017.

Nana Aba Amfo served as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Ghana from November 2019 to July 2021.

In July 2021, she was appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor, making her the youngest and first female to have held such a position in the history of Ghana.

Prof. Amfo serves on the Advisory Board of Coalition of People Against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and Harmful Practices (CoPASH) under the auspices of the UNFPA.

The Council acted in accordance with, “Section 10(2)(b) of the University of Ghana Act, 2010 (Act 806) and section 6(3) of the University of Ghana Statutes,” the statement said.

Her appointment in an acting position was necessitated by the inability of the University to complete processes for the selection of a substantive replacement for the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu.

If confirmed, the 49-year old Professor of Linguistics will not only become the first female to assume the role in the nation’s premier university. She will also be the youngest ever to achieve the feat.

With the Chancellor, Registrar and Council Chair of the university all being females, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo completes a quartet of an all-female leadership of the university.

In 2020, Prof. Rita Dickson was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, making her the second female to be appointed to the position in a public university after the University of Cape Coast’s Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang.
