German World Cup Winner Lothar Matthäus and partners buys Accra Lions

World Cup Champion from 1990 Lothar Matthäus and two other investors have officially acquired Accra Lions of the Ghana Premier League.

Frank Acheampong, a football player from Ghana, and Frankfurt-based football agent Oliver König will jointly own the club, which is valued at over $2 million.

In an interview, Lothar Matthäus said Ghana has a large pool of talents, which must be tapped into.

“Ghana has always had huge potential for talent, you can see that in the national team,” said the 62-year-old.

“We want to bring young players to Europe. In a serious way and already well-trained. That’s why we’re also investing in the training ground here.”

Accra Lions are currently enjoying their second season in the Ghana Premier League and have playing some of the best football in the league. With three games to go, they are set for a mid-table finish.
