Ghana bags 56 medals at Africa Aquatics Championships

Ghana’s swimmers secured 56 medals in total at the 2024 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Junior & Senior Swimming Championships, hosted at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra from 7 to 9 October.

The event showcased outstanding performances from both the junior and senior teams, with 12-year-old Jada Yankey emerging as the star of the competition.

Yankey, the youngest competitor, excelled in both the junior and senior categories, amassing nine medals across two days—four gold, one silver, and four bronze. Her achievements added to Ghana’s impressive overall haul.

Olympians Harry Stacey and Abeiku Jackson also delivered strong results. Stacey dominated his events, taking home gold in the 100m breaststroke, 200m freestyle, and 50m breaststroke. Jackson added to Ghana’s medal count with another gold, bolstering the team’s overall success.

Other standouts included Nubia Adjei, Titus Ankra, Mercedes Abdellah, and Ivan Snowden, who all contributed gold medals.

In the senior category, Ghana finished second with 28 medals (14 gold, seven silver and seven bronze), five short of Senegal’s 33. Nigeria placed third with 17 medals.

Despite securing more total medals in the junior category than second-place Senegal (17 medals) and third-place Nigeria (24 medals), Ghana finished third overall. This result was due to the majority of Ghana’s medals being silver (13 out of 28), while Nigeria topped the table with 14 golds.

The 2024 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Junior & Senior Swimming Championships mark a significant milestone for Ghana’s swimming team, with young talents like Yankey looking poised for further success on the international stage.
