The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed cases of cholera in the Greater Accra region, with reports emerging from the Ada West District.
This follows an initial case on 4 October 2024, when a patient presented symptoms of vomiting and abdominal pain after attending a funeral in the district.
As of 11 October 2024, additional cases have been confirmed in both Ada West and Ada East Districts, sparking an immediate public health response.
The GHS, in collaboration with other health and emergency bodies, has activated Public Health Emergency Management Committees (PHEMCs) at all levels across the affected districts.
A multi-sectoral response team, including representatives from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Education Service (GES), and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has also been mobilised to address the outbreak.
In a statement signed by Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director General of GHS, the public is urged to adhere to cholera prevention guidelines, particularly with regards to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene practices.
The ministry reassures the public of its ongoing efforts to contain the outbreak and protect public health.
Water sampling is also being conducted for microbiology and culture analysis in the affected districts. Potable water distribution has commenced in areas facing water challenges to improve sanitation.
The Ministry of Health, together with its partners, promises to keep the public informed as the situation develops. The GHS further advises the public to report symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea to the nearest health facility immediately for prompt treatment.
