Maryland State Police Continue Fatal Collision Investigation In Prince George’s County

(New Carrollton, MD) Shortly before 4:30 a.m. this morning, the Maryland State Police, College Park Barrack responded to a fatal collision on IS Route 495/95 Inner Loop of the Washington Beltway prior to the eastbound US Route 50 ramp, New Carrollton, Prince George’s County, Maryland.  There was a 2006 Acura TL passenger vehicle and 2015 Freightliner box truck involved in this collision.  Both drivers were traveling on IS Route 495/95 Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway.  The driver and sole occupant of the Acura was pronounced deceased at the scene.  Preliminary investigation revealed the driver of the Acura changed lanes in front of the driver and sole occupant of the box truck causing the collision.  The driver of the box truck struck the rear of the Acura.  The driver of the box truck was not injured.  There was no indication of alcohol on either driver.

The driver of the Acura was identified as Kwesi Kwaasi, 37, Silver Spring, MD.  The driver of the box truck was identified as Christopher Simpson, 27, Suitland, MD.  Next of kin was notified.

Maryland State Police, Crash Team responded to the scene and conducted the investigation.  Two lanes were closed for approximately three hours.  The State Highway Administration handled the lane closures.  The Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene and handled the medical portion of the collision.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation but it seems that failure to give full time and attention, unsafe lane change and failure to yield the right of way were contributing factors in this collision.  We urge all citizens to travel at the posted speed limit, use signals, check your blind spots and give your full attention to your driving when traveling on the roadway.  Anyone with information regarding this crash is asked to contact the Maryland State Police, College Park Barrack.  The investigation is continuing.
