Alexander Kwabena Djiku

Alexander Kwabena Baidoo Djiku is a professional footballer who plays as a defender for Ligue 1 club Strasbourg and the Ghana national team. Djiku is of Ghanaian and French descent. He debuted with the senior Ghana national team in a 3–0 friendly loss to Mali on 9 October 2020.

He also played his second match for Ghana against Qatar on 12 October 2020 in which he impressed. Djiku’s third match came when he was given the opportunity by the Black Stars’ new head coach to start against Zimbabwe in a World Cup qualifier where Ghana won 3–1.

The Black Stars defender Alexander Djiku rendered an unqualified apology to Ghanaians after the team failed woefully in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana’s campaign shockingly ended on Tuesday evening after failing to win the must-win game against Comoros.

The Black Stars were beaten 3-2 by the debutants a result which saw them finish bottom of Group C with one point.
“Words will certainly not be enough to erase the frustration”, Djiku, who scored Black Stars’ second goal against Comoros, wrote on his Twitter account.

“We are disappointed and also sorry for our Ghanaian people to have failed at this stage of the competition.
“We must stay focused because qualifying for the World Cup must motivate us more than anything.” But no doubt he exhibited an outstanding performance throughout all the three games and has been praised for being one of the few players who put up a brave display in Cameroon.

Djiku spent his youth career at Bastia. He played for the reserve team until 2014 when he was promoted to the senior team. After spending three years at the club, he joined Caen and made his debut in a Coupe de la Ligue match against Évian in December 2013. On 11 July 2017, he joined Ligue 1 side, Stade Malherbe Caen, on a four-year contract. He was acquired by Strasbourg in the summer of 2019.
