The National Football League (NFL) have taken the initiative to expand its perimeter to Africa by identifying fresh new talents and developing them for greater opportunities. The league hosted its first official event in Ghana.
The team representatives arrived on the shores of Ghana for various activities which started on 21st June 2022. Some of the activities included a talent identification camp, fan event, flag football clinic etc.
Some of the players who are Africans or of African descent that made it to Ghana were Osi Umenyiora, Uchenna Nwosu (Nigerian), Jeremiah Yaw Owusu- Koramoah (Ghanaian), Kwity Paye (Liberian) just to mention a few.
Osi Umenyiora, two-time Super Bowl-winning DE gave an incredible speech to the delegates. Using his life’s experience and referring to how far he’s come from his village in Nigeria he motivated the team players to take advantage of the opportunity that will change their lives. In his own words, he said, “a year ago no one would have ever imagined this would have been possible…”
The NFL players did have a great time not only training the selected athletes and school kids in Accra, they toured some of the great historical sites such as Kakum National Rain Forest, met some fans at the slave trade castle and enjoyed a river boat tour on the Volta River.
“The Touchdown,” is NFL’s official maiden event in Ghana (Africa), the beginning of many big things to come.
