Chicago GhanaFest returns with “Sankofa” theme weekend of Cultural Activities

The Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago (GNC) and its Affiliates present the 34th Chicago GhanaFest themed, Sankofa from July 29th to 30th July, 2022 in Chicago.

Traditionally held on the last Saturday of July, this year, the GNC has dedicated the entire weekend to displaying and educating the city of Chicago about the culture, food, fashion, and music of the people of Ghana.

The festivities kick off with a Black Tie Corporate Excellence Awards and Dinner themed “Introducing Kente in the Boardroom” at Chateau Del Mar on July 29th, 8301 W 95th St. in Hickory Hills, IL 60457 from 7:00 PM until 10:00 PM.

The event will introduce businesses and organizations that incorporate and educate about the Ghanaian culture. Guests are encouraged to wear formal or traditional attire.

The festival will continue with its flagship event GhanaFest on Saturday, July 30th, 2022 at Washington Park; 5500 South Russell Drive, Chicago, IL. from 10:00 AM until 10:00 PM.

A $15 gate donation allows patrons unrestricted access to the all-day festival.

Various attractions and activities are available, such as Ghanaian food vendors and guests can taste authentic Ghanaian dishes.

Many vendors will also sell goods such as shea butter, African clothing, art, and jewelry from Ghana.

There would also be cultural displays as the Chiefs and Queen Mothers of the various tribes will participate in the parade of chiefs, and tribal cultural performances.

Live music will be provided around the clock featuring world-traveled musicians that will delight patrons with a wide variety of music and also by accompanying many musicians and stage performers.

The youth will be delighted by the abundance of activities at the Youth Village tents, which include dancing competitions, Ghana trivia, face painting, a bouncy house, and much more.

Soccer fans and enthusiasts will enjoy GhanaFest Official Soccer Match on July 31st located at 6220 S. Stony Island Chicago, IL 60637 at 4:00 PM.

The match against Liberia will be the first as members of the Ghanaian community will play against Liberia.

The goal of the Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago is to invite African Americans to the festival and make them feel like they are spending a day in Ghana.
