Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup: Ghana loses first match to Portugal

Ghana played their first match against Portugal in the Qatar, 2022 FIFA World Cup. The streets of Accra were quiet when the game started as every Ghanaian with expectancy was glued to their television.

The game kicked off with Portugal having about 70% ball possession and Ghana about 23% in the first half.

The toughness of the match led the Black Stars to play defensively for 52 minutes with no goal scored. Both teams head to the locker room scoreless after the first half.

About 10 minutes into the second half, Cristiano Ronaldo set the pace of the game when he scored Ghana through the penalty awarded to Portugal by Ismail Elfath; the Moroccan- American referee.

Cristiano Ronaldo made history and became the first man to score in five World Cups.

A goal that brought about tension and agitation but shortly after, Andrew Ayew, Captain of the Ghana Black Stars equalized that goal beautifully before coach Otto Addo substituted him and Mohammed Kudus.

But that moment of relief, ecstasy, and cheering were short-lived as Joao Felix took the lead back to Portugal’s, 8 minutes after Ghana equalized followed by a 3rd goal scored by Rafael Leão.

Despite all efforts made by Ghana Black Stars to be at bay, Osman Bukari headed the second goal, bringing the final scores to 3- 2. Ghana lost the match to Portugal.

With Portugal now at the top of the list in group H, Ghana stands to play South Korea on Monday.
