Former Ghana forward Robert Eshun has reportedly passed away in London at the age of 48.
Ghana football has suffered two tragic losses with the recent deaths of former footballer Opoku Afriyie ‘Bayie’ Eshun and former Minister of Youth and Sports, Enoch Teye Mensah.
Eshun, who famously scored the winning goal for Asante Kotoko against rivals Hearts of Oak in the 1990 FA Cup final, passed away on Monday, October 23rd at age 48. According to reports, he suffered a fatal cardiac arrest while driving to work that morning.
The striker played for Kotoko from the late 1980s to early 1990s where he became a fan favorite. After leaving Ghana, Eshun had stints with clubs in Belgium, Turkey and Malaysia before retiring in 2003.
Just three weeks prior, Ghana mourned the loss of Enoch Teye Mensah on October 1st at the age of 77. Mensah served as the longest running Sports Minister under the Rawlings government. He also held positions as Minister of Education and Employment during his distinguished political career.
From 1996 to 2016, Mensah was a Member of Parliament representing Ningo Prampram. His death and that of former footballer Eshun have left a void in Ghanaian sports. Both men made immense contributions to football in the country.
