Lionel Messi wins eighth Men’s Ballon d’Or award, beating Erling Haaland to trophy

Argentina and Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has won the Men’s Ballon d’Or award for a record 8th time.
Messi was recognized for helping Argentina win the 2022 World Cup. He beat out Manchester City’s Erling Haaland who came in 2nd place.
England and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham won the Kopa Trophy for best U21 player.
Haaland was given the Gerd Müller Trophy for top goalscorer after his prolific season with Man City.
Messi has now won 3 more Ballon d’Or awards than any other player, with Cristiano Ronaldo next with 5 wins.
Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez won the Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper after winning the World Cup.
Manchester City were named Club of the Year after winning the domestic treble last season.
Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. received the Socrates Award for his charitable work and vowed to keep fighting racism in football after repeated abuse.
The Ballon d’Or is voted on by journalists and recognizes the best footballer each year. Messi further cemented his status as the greatest by claiming his 8th award.
