The deputy CEO of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Linda Boamah Asante, has said her outfit has implemented pragmatic initiatives aimed at achieving higher penetration of clean fuel to mitigate the consequences of climate change.
According to her, the NPA has set an ambitious target of a hundred and seventy percent Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) usage for urban and rural households, respectively.
Asante further indicated that LPG is the cleanest fuel, hence the need for its universal adoption for domestic use.
“The NPA, as a regulator of the downstream petroleum industry, is the worst culprit in terms of the emersion of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In order for us to contribute to reducing carbon dioxide, we are working with the Energy Ministry on an Energy Transition Framework. I will urge all of you to read about it, especially the youth,” she said.
“The NPA has also implemented the National LPG Promotion Policy with the target of making LPG accessible and available to everyone.
“The NPA wants to get close to every community so that we reduce our reliance on forest reserves. LPG is the cleanest fuel we have.
“As part of the policy and in line with Sustainable Development Goal 7, by 2030, the NPA targets a hundred percent LPG coverage of urban settlers and seventy percent of rural households using LPG. This is because the use of charcoal presents dire consequences,” Asante added.
The introduction of the cylinder recirculation model, among other policies, constitutes deliberate attempts to project LPG as an alternative to other domestic fuels.
She was speaking at a Pre-COP 28 Youth Climate Dialogue and Innovation Exhibition organized under the theme: Youth in Climate Action, organised by the African Women and Children Conference (AFRIWOCC).
The ceremony brought together high-profile personalities including the Second Lady of the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Samira Bawumia, representatives of academia, and climate change activists.
