Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced a transformative step in Ghana’s public transport sector with the commissioning of electric buses, aimed at reducing costs and promoting sustainability.
Speaking at the event in Accra on Wednesday (27 November) Dr Bawumia highlighted that this initiative fulfils the government’s commitment to reducing public transportation costs and easing Ghanaians’ cost of living.
The electric buses, powered by charging systems rather than traditional fuel, are expected to lower operational expenses by up to 50%. This reduction will, in turn, significantly cut public transport fares, providing relief for commuters.
“With the new buses powered through charging its electric system, and not through fuel, its operational cost will be reduced significantly, thus, also reducing the cost of public transport by 40% to 50%,” Dr. Bawumia stated in a Facebook post.
The Vice President emphasized that this initiative is not limited to government-operated buses but also opens opportunities for privately-owned bus and trotro operators to adopt electric vehicles. Plans are underway to establish electric charging stations in key locations across Accra, facilitating the broader rollout of the programme.
Dr. Bawumia also addressed initial skepticism surrounding the initiative, noting the government’s determination to prove naysayers wrong.
“If other countries could deploy electric buses to make life easier for their citizens, why not Ghana? With a mindset of possibility, we will, together, make many things possible and transform our country,” he declared.
The commissioning of these buses, he added, aligns with the government’s broader agenda to modernize infrastructure and address pressing economic challenges facing citizens.
