Dr. Moro O. Salifu Appointed Governor Designee of the American College of Physicians (ACP)

Moro O. Salifu, M.D., MPH, MBA, MACP, Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine, SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, is Governor-elect Designee for the New York Brooklyn/Queens/Staten Island Region of the American College of Physicians (ACP).

This appointment reflects Dr. Salifu’s longstanding commitment to advancing internal medicine, fostering professional development, and improving healthcare outcomes. His election highlights Downstate’s leadership in medical education and healthcare innovation.

Dr. Salifu will officially begin his term as Governor-elect on April 5, 2025; he will assume his four-year term as Governor on April 18, 2026, serving through 2030.

He will oversee local ACP activities, including scientific meetings, programs for medical students and residents, and public representation for the ACP.

As a member of the ACP Board of Governors, Dr. Salifu will contribute to shaping national policies that influence the future of internal medicine.

“I am profoundly honored to be elected Governor-elect Designee by my peers and colleagues,” said Dr. Salifu. “I look forward to collaborating with the American College of Physicians to advance equity, innovation, and excellence in our field, advocate for internal medicine physicians and their patients, and promote the highest medical education and care standards.”

Ghana-born Dr. Salifu was named Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP) in 2018 as a distinguished science, medicine, and ACP leadership contributor.

He serves as Chair of the Chapter’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force. He is a Past Councilor of the Brooklyn District. Dr. Salifu is also the Edwin C. and Anne K. Weiskopf Endowed Chair in Nephrology and Transplantation at Downstate and a loyal supporter of the ACP’s mission.

Dr. Salifu received the New York American College of Physicians Laureate Award 2022 for excellence in medical care, community service, education, research, the chapter, and the College. He is widely recognized for his expertise in nephrology and health disparities research, having significantly advanced medical education, research, and mentorship in internal medicine.
