Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hannah Serwaa Tetteh, has been appointed as the United Nations Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
The United Nations announced the appointment on January 25, 2025, via its official Facebook page in Ghana.
“Congratulations to Ms. Hannah Serwaa Tetteh of Ghana on her appointment by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres as his Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL),” the post read.
Hannah Tetteh takes over from Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal, who served in the position until May 2024. She becomes the 10th person to assume this role since its establishment in 2011.
Prior to that, she was the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) from 2018 to 2020. Earlier in her career, she served as Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi.
Her diplomatic journey includes serving as Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2013 to 2017, where she also chaired the Council of Ministers and the Mediation and Security Council of ECOWAS. She had earlier served as Ghana’s Minister of Trade and Industry, playing a crucial role in the country’s economic development. Additionally, she was the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West from 2013 to 2017.
