GHPAC Endorses Tony Afriyie – Ghanaian American Running for Connecticut State Senate

The Ghana Diaspora Political Action Committee (GHPAC) has announced its endorsement of Tony Afriyie, a dedicated public servant and Democratic candidate, for Connecticut’s 21st State Senate District in a special election occurring Tuesday, February 25th.

Tony Afriyie, currently serving as a Stratford Town Councilman, has consistently demonstrated a commitment to bipartisan leadership and community service. Born in the Bronx, NY, and raised in Stratford, CT, Tony is a first-generation Ghanaian American. Guided by the values of hard work and community instilled by his immigrant parents, Tony has dedicated his life to public service.

A graduate of Western Connecticut State University with a degree in political science, Tony recently completed his master’s in public administration, specializing in urban development and sustainability, at Baruch College’s Marxe School of Public and International Affairs.

After graduating during the pandemic, Tony served with AmeriCorps NCCC, contributing to disaster recovery, conservation efforts, and urban development across states like Colorado, Louisiana, and Missouri.

In his professional capacity, Tony serves as the press secretary for U.S. Representative Rosa DeLauro, where he has gained invaluable experience in legislative processes and constituent advocacy.

“Tony is the real deal and will be one of the leaders of a new class of public servants at a time when people are in real need of fresh leadership” said Adjoa Kyerematen of the Ghana Diaspora Political Action Committee. “He has worn the hat of town councilor, Congressional staffer and community leader at the same time. Tony has a pragmatic approach, proven track record, and real solutions to make life easier for constituents. As someone who is not new to hardwork,Tony will be a critical advocate for small businesses. ”

Tony’s campaign is centered on addressing economic inequality, reducing the cost of living, supporting workforce training, and promoting environmental sustainability. His dedication to these issues reflects his commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents of the 21st District.

“I am deeply honored to receive the endorsement of the Ghana Diaspora PAC,” said Afriyie. “As the son of Ghanaian immigrants, I know firsthand the sacrifices our families make to build a better future. This endorsement reaffirms our shared commitment to opportunity, progress, and the values that unite us. Together, we will continue to uplift our communities and ensure every voice is heard.”

The special election for Connecticut’s 21st State Senate District is scheduled for February 25, 2025. GHPAC encourages all eligible voters in the district, which includes Shelton, Stratford, Monroe, and Seymour, to support Tony Afriyie—a candidate who embodies the values and aspirations of the Ghanaian American community and is poised to bring fresh energy and bold solutions.
