Ghana is celebrating 60 years of the cedi, marking six decades of monetary independence and national pride.

The Cedi@60 anniversary is a celebration of evolution of Ghana’s currency from cowry shells used in the 14th century, to colonial coins and pounds, and finally to the cedi introduced in 1965 by President Kwame Nkrumah.

After the 1966 coup, a new cedi replaced the original, circulating until 2007, when President John Agyekum Kufuor launched the current Ghana cedi.

The Bank of Ghana has been in charge of issuing all Ghanaian currency since 1958.
