Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie Sworn In as Ghana’s New Chief Justice

President John Dramani Mahama on Monday officially swore in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s new Chief Justice, following Parliament’s massive endorsement of his nomination.

A veteran of the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, Baffoe-Bonnie had served as acting Chief Justice since April after the suspension and eventual dismissal of his predecessor, Gertrude Torkornoo.

Mahama nominated him on 23 September, citing his extensive judicial experience and service across multiple tiers of the judiciary.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on 10 November, Baffoe-Bonnie committed to fostering inclusive, bipartisan leadership, strengthening judicial independence, and widening access to justice.

Parliament approved his appointment on 13 November with 163 votes in favour and 69 against, paving the way for Monday’s swearing-in ceremony at Jubilee House in Accra.

With his confirmation, Baffoe-Bonnie now fully assumes the role of head of the judiciary, where he is expected to lead reforms aimed at improving efficiency and bolstering public confidence in Ghana’s justice system.
