Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the approval of an issuance of a Ghanaian passport to US-based internet personality IShowSpeed, the country’s foreign minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has said.
In a social media post addressed to Ghanaian YouTuber and travel vlogger Wode Maya, Mr Ablakwa said the decision followed discussions and what he described as the “irrefutable ties” of IShowSpeed to Ghana.
“I am pleased to inform you and our compatriots that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian Passport to IShowSpeed,” the minister wrote.
IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr, ended his Africa Tour in Ghana, a visit that has been widely felt.
The minister praised both IShowSpeed and Wode Maya for promoting Ghana and Africa internationally.
“Keep making our great nation Ghana, and our beloved African continent proud” He added.
In September last year, the ministry granted diplomatic passports to popular YouTuber Wode Maya and four other distinguished creative and cultural champions to aid in promoting the country’s image internationally.
The aim of the initiative is to leverage their influence for cultural diplomacy and Diaspora engagement.
“We are ever so delighted to have granted you a diplomatic passport last year,” he added.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is yet to release further details on the type of passport to be issued to IShowSpeed, and the timeline for the process.
