Ghanaian-American model and writer Abena Christine Jon’el has attracted attention after relocating to Ghana and appearing on a major fashion runway with her prosthetic leg wrapped in traditional Kente cloth.
Abena lost her right leg at the age of two following a diagnosis of a rare childhood cancer.
After growing up in the United States, she visited Ghana in 2021, an experience she described as deeply meaningful.
Within a few months, she moved permanently to Accra, where she has embraced Ghanaian culture and built strong ties within the community.
Her runway appearance took place at Rhythms on the Runway, one of Ghana’s leading fashion events.
By wrapping her prosthetic leg in Kente, a fabric known for symbolizing heritage, identity and pride, she made a statement celebrating Ghanaian culture while promoting disability inclusion.
Abena says her aim is to increase the visibility of people living with disabilities and challenge stereotypes by presenting disability with confidence, style and dignity.
