The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the national football team effective 13 April 2026.

Queiroz is one of football’s most seasoned international coaches, having worked across several continents with both national teams and elite clubs.

His résumé includes spells with Portugal, Iran, Colombia, Egypt, and South Africa, as well as assistant roles at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson and a head coach position at Real Madrid.

He is best known in international football for his tactical discipline and ability to organise teams in major tournaments.

Four World Cups as head coach

Queiroz previously led teams at four editions of the tournament as head coach:

2010 – Portugal
2014 – Iran
2018 – Iran
2022 – Iran

Across his four tournaments as head coach, his record stands at:

Matches played: 13
Wins: 3
Draws: 4
Losses: 6

This excludes his assistant coaching role in 2002.

He was part of the Portugal coaching staff at the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.

New Hope For Ghana

Ghana is looking to stabilise their preparations ahead of the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico after a mixed run of results in recent international fixtures.

Queiroz’s appointment is seen as a move to bring structure, discipline and tournament experience to a young squad aiming to make an impact on the global stage.
