UK and France to lead Strait of Hormuz security mission

The UK and France are to lead a multinational mission aimed at protecting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the operation would be “strictly peaceful and defensive”, focusing on reassuring merchant vessels and supporting mine clearance efforts in the region.

The deployment is expected to take place only after active fighting in the area has ended.

Officials say dozens of countries have indicated a willingness to contribute to the initiative, suggesting broad international backing.

Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted global shipping in recent weeks, with Iran accused of effectively blocking the route following attacks linked to the United States and Israel.

Although both Iran and the US have signalled that the passage is now temporarily open, shipping activity remains limited amid continued uncertainty.

French President Emmanuel Macron warned that instability in the strait has had serious consequences for the global economy, particularly energy markets.

Further details of the mission are expected after a military planning conference in London next week.
