Ghana’s Ministry of Railway Development has taken delivery of the first unit of two modern trains procured from Poland earlier in January.
The trains set for later commissioning in June will run the new Tema-Mpakadan standard-gauge railway line, transporting passengers from Mpakadan through Kpong, Juapong, and Doryumu all the way to the Tema port.
Another batch of 10 trains is expected later in August, the chief executive officer of the Ghana Railway Development Authority, Yaw Owusu said in February when he was in Poland for the handing-over ceremony.
“There is no country that has developed or industrialised without a vibrant, efficient railway system. Ghana, we are on our long journey, basically to ensure that we can accomplish our goal to build a network of 4000km of railway network across the country to assist us with the industrialisation agenda”, Mr. Owusu said according to the Daily Graphic’s publication.
The trains, which are diesel-powered, were assembled by Polish manufacturing firm, PESA, who in addition to the contract, would be responsible for maintenance issues.
