Prince Edward Honoured with Traditional Title at Jubilee House Durbar

Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, received a warm cultural reception at Jubilee House in Accra on Tuesday as he was honoured with a traditional Gadangme chieftaincy title during a colourful durbar held in his name.

The Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs bestowed on him the title “Nii Yehowah Da”, signifying “Chief of God is Great,” as part of a ceremony that brought together government officials, traditional leaders, members of the UK High Commission, and schoolchildren.

President John Dramani Mahama praised the gesture as a symbol of the long-standing relationship between Ghana and the United Kingdom, anchored on shared values and mutual respect. He noted that the honour reflected Ghana’s recognition of the Duke’s contributions to youth development, particularly through the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.

In his remarks, Prince Edward expressed deep appreciation for the welcome and cultural recognition, describing the experience as humbling and memorable. He conveyed greetings from King Charles III and reaffirmed the UK’s admiration for Ghana, highlighting both nations’ shared heritage and ongoing cooperation.

The Duke’s visit forms part of a broader effort to deepen Ghana–UK collaboration in education, innovation, climate-resilient development, and youth empowerment.
