On 17 December 1924, after nearly three decades of forced exile, King Prempeh I and members of the Asante royal court were permitted by the British colonial authorities to return from the Seychelles, where they had been banished following the Anglo-Asante wars.
Their return marked the end of a long period of political humiliation and the gradual restoration of Asante dignity under colonial rule.

Closely associated with this repatriation was the return of the remains of Queen Mother Yaa Asantewaa, the legendary warrior who led the Asante resistance during the 1900 War of the Golden Stool.
Yaa Asantewaa had died in exile in the Seychelles in 1921, never seeing the land she fought so fiercely to defend.
Her remains were later brought back to Asante for a proper burial, allowing her to be honored according to tradition and reaffirming her enduring place in Asante history.
