There have been questions regarding why the Ghanaian film industry isn’t growing and what role the government can play in bringing about change.
But this hitch is not preventing young creatives from achieving their dreams given that so many outstanding directors and producers are emanating from Ghana and Africa as a whole.
These storytellers are working hard to present their audience with dynamic, unique, and original African narratives.
Meet Quaque Kelvin Makafui known as Kelvin Mckay, producer of the film, THE HIMBAS.
Kelvin is a film director, producer, special effects and makeup artist, content creator, and scriptwriter. He tells me from a young age, he has always identified himself as a creative person.
“What inspired me to do the movie is myself and God! Filmmaking was a call for me right from my childhood. So I told myself I must showcase my talent.”
His recent movie, THE HIMBAS, is making waves as the intriguing film explores an ancient tradition of the Northern people of Namibia.
About Film, “THE HIMBAS”
The film takes us on a journey to Namibia, a true storyline about a Himba practice where husbands offer their wives to guests for the night as a sign of hospitality.
“Talking about HIMBAS, it all started when I overheard a conversation between some people talking about certain traditions! I later research it and realize it’s an interesting tradition so I put it into a script and develop it! I called my team and informed them that we were going to shoot and we did,” he said.
Some of the cast of the film includes Kofi Adjorlolo, Rita Lamptey, Abdullah Sadick, Promise Lumor, Elvin Shitor, Dogli prosper, Roselyn Aquila, Eric Fafa, Saviour, and Kelvin Torgbedzu among others.
“I feel very blessed and happy producing THE HIMBAS! I urge everyone to get the film and watch it!,” he appealed.
As there are challenges that come with every project, the young creative said his major difficulty as a producer has always been funding his projects. He expressed appreciation to everyone who played a part to support his project.
“I can’t talk about Himbas without saying a big thank you to my executive producer, Mr. Dominic Mensah, and my entire team on the project.
Kelvin has produced movies such as Campus Diary, Worldly Desire, This Thing Called Love, Then Things Some, The Anniversary, Survivors, Aloekple, and The HIMBAS, some of which he directed.
He also urged the government to assist in reviving the Ghanaian film industry.
“We really need to put hands together to develop and push the Ghana film industry! The government needs to invest in us! I call on everyone to patronize our content as well as the media,” he appealed.
Kelvin’s biggest aspiration is to become a successful filmmaker and a giant in the media field producing intriguing films, and impacting society.
