Ghana’s national chess team, the Golden Knights, has returned from the 46th World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, with a gold medal and seven newly awarded international titles.
Ghana’s women’s team finished first in Rating Category D, securing gold for the country at the prestigious international tournament.
The team comprised Maud Benson, Gertrude Banini, Ridham, Dzidzor Esi Dotse and Sumya Ibrahim Dotse. The official tournament records list the five players in that order for Ghana’s women’s team.
Seven Ghanaian players also earned new FIDE titles during the Olympiad:
- FM Bernard Anhwere
- CM Price Akpa
- CM Dr Daniel Mensah Loglo
- WFM Maud Benson
- WCM Sumya Ibrahim Dotse
- WCM Ridham
- WCM Dzidzor Esi Dotse
The seven titles comprise one FIDE Master title, two Candidate Master titles, one Woman FIDE Master title and three Woman Candidate Master titles.
The achievement represents a notable performance for Ghanaian chess on the international stage, with the Golden Knights returning from Samarkand with both a team gold medal in their rating category and seven newly titled players.
