Government to transform National Cathedral project into creative economy hub

The John Mahama administration has announced plans to convert the stalled National Cathedral project into a National Cultural Convention Centre (NCCC) as part of a broader push to revitalise the creative economy.

The new centre, to be developed in partnership with the AfCFTA Secretariat, will host international exhibitions, film festivals, and cultural summits under the government’s 24-hour economy initiative dubbed SH0W24.

Originally launched in 2018 as a national Christian monument, the Cathedral project faced backlash over ballooning costs and the use of public funds.

Officials now say the site will serve a more inclusive national purpose, positioning Ghana as a cultural and creative hub in Africa.

The initiative also includes plans for a National Creators Academy, over 250 24/7 community centres, and the introduction of a Ghana Cultural Passport to promote tourism and exports.

The NCCC is expected to be fully operational by 2030.
