Ghana orders multi-mission Airbus helicopters

Ghana has placed its first order for multi-mission helicopters from Airbus, marking a new partnership between the country and the European aircraft manufacturer.

The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract for four helicopters: two H175M multi-role aircraft, one ACH175 and one ACH160.

The acquisition is aimed at strengthening Ghana’s air capabilities across a range of military and civil support operations.

According to Airbus Helicopters, the two H175M helicopters will be used for multiple missions, including troop and logistics transport, search and rescue operations, emergency medical services and disaster-relief support.

The ACH175 and ACH160 helicopters will be deployed mainly for transport duties.

Airbus described the deal as its return to Ghana, highlighting a renewed focus on long-term customer support and cooperation with the country’s defence sector.

Arnaud Montalvo, Airbus Helicopters’ head for Africa and the Middle East, said the company was pleased to see the H175M selected by Ghana, noting the aircraft’s flexibility and suitability for a wide range of defence and security missions.

He added that the order positions Ghana among leading operators of Airbus helicopters in West Africa.

The H175 is part of Airbus’ super-medium helicopter family and is known for its long-range capability, high payload capacity and smooth flight performance. The militarised H175M variant is designed to operate in demanding environments while supporting diverse mission profiles.

The ACH160, meanwhile, is described by Airbus as the most technologically advanced helicopter in its corporate range. It incorporates dozens of patented innovations and offers increased cabin space and larger windows compared with earlier medium twin-engine helicopters, improving comfort for passengers.

The purchase forms part of Ghana’s broader efforts to modernise its air fleet and enhance operational readiness for both defence and humanitarian tasks.
