The Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President (DAOOP), has announced a temporary suspension of the Ghanaian citizenship application process for historical diasporans.
In a statement released on Sunday, February 1, 2026, the two institutions explained that the suspension forms part of a joint effort to further streamline and enhance the application process, making it more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly for members of the diaspora.
According to the statement, the pause is intended to allow for institutional refinements that will improve the overall experience for applicants seeking Ghanaian citizenship by historical descent.
The Ministry and the Diaspora Affairs Office emphasized their continued commitment to welcoming members of the global African family back home.
“Both institutions remain fully committed to welcoming members of the global African family home and are working collaboratively to introduce refinements that will make future applications smoother and more seamless,” the statement said.
The public has been assured that revised timelines and updated guidelines will be announced in due course through official communication channels.
The Ministry of the Interior and the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President also expressed appreciation for the interest, enthusiasm, and cooperation shown by prospective applicants, noting that the application process is expected to resume shortly.
The statement was jointly signed by the Ministry of the Interior and the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President.
