President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a new liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vessel aimed at strengthening energy supply and distribution in Ghana and the wider West African region.
The vessel, MT Asharami Ghana, was unveiled during a ceremony in South Korea as part of efforts to expand LPG transportation capacity and improve energy security.
Speaking at the event, Mr Mahama described the commissioning as a significant milestone in strengthening infrastructure supporting the global LPG supply chain.
He said improving energy access and accelerating the transition to cleaner fuels remained key challenges for many countries.
The project was developed through a partnership involving Sahara Group and West Africa Gas Limited.

Mr Mahama noted that LPG continues to play an important role in the transition to cleaner energy, particularly in Africa where many households still rely on charcoal and firewood for cooking.
Ghana currently produces about half of its LPG needs domestically, with the rest imported to meet demand.

The new vessel is expected to help strengthen supply reliability and improve LPG distribution across the region.
The president added that strategic partnerships and investment in energy infrastructure would be essential to expanding access to cleaner fuels and supporting long-term socio-economic development in Ghana and across Africa.
