Ghanaian virtual reality developer Mr. Edmund Kwaku Darko is gaining national attention in the United States for pioneering a new approach to virtual reality that allows users not just to view African heritage, but to participate in the cultural events that give it meaning.

Mr. Darko, an MFA candidate at Ohio University and a graduate of KNUST, is the creator of Reliving Relics, a VR platform designed for museums and cultural institutions.

The system goes beyond traditional virtual exhibits by recreating historical events and rituals, allowing users’ movements and interactions to trigger key cultural moments. This event-driven design enables a powerful sense of embodiment.

A highlight of the platform is an immersive experience featuring an interactive narrative sequence centered on the Golden Stool of the Ashanti Kingdom, revealing its origin, historical, and spiritual significance.

Mr. Darko’s work has earned multiple distinctions, including First Place at the 2026 Ohio University Student Expo and a historic dual win of the Best Graduate Student Teaching Awards in both Emerging Communication Technologies and Media Arts and Studies.

“This is the first time in the program’s 10-year history that one individual has received both awards,” said Mr. Eric Williams, the director of the MFA Communication Media Arts program at Ohio University, who presented the honors.

As interest grows, Mr. Edmund Kwaku Darko aims to expand Reliving Relics through collaborations with cultural institutions in the U.S. and abroad, positioning VR as a bridge between traditional heritage spaces and the global African diaspora.
