Kenya’s Hellen Obiri delivered another elite marathon performance on Sunday, finishing second at the London Marathon in a time of 2:15:53 after a fiercely contested race against a world-class field.

The two-time Olympic 5,000m medallist stayed in contention throughout the 42.2km race, which featured a lead pack including Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa and Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei. The trio pushed a blistering early pace, with the half marathon mark reached in 1:06:12—already ahead of women-only world record splits.

Despite the relentless tempo, Obiri remained composed within the lead group as the race unfolded along London’s streets. However, Assefa ultimately produced a decisive surge in the closing stages to break away and secure victory in 2:15:41, lowering the women’s-only world record in the process.

Obiri crossed the finish line 12 seconds later, securing second place and registering a new personal best that further cements her growing stature in elite marathon running.

“I gave everything I had on the streets of London today,” Obiri said after the race. “The pace was incredibly fast and the competition was world-class, but I finished knowing I left nothing behind on the course.”

The performance adds to an already impressive marathon résumé for Obiri, who has won major titles in Boston and New York City. Her return to London also carried symbolic significance, having previously won the 5,000m world title in the same city in 2017.

Her coach, Laura Thweatt, praised her resilience and adaptability, describing the performance as evidence of Obiri’s consistency at the highest level.

“A podium finish in London is an incredible achievement given the depth of this field and the blistering pace,” Thweatt said, adding that Obiri’s ability to transition successfully to fast marathon racing continues to stand out.

The result reinforces Obiri’s status as one of the most consistent long-distance runners in the world as she continues to build on her rapid rise in marathon racing.
