Ghana has underlined its growing dominance in armwrestling on the continent after finishing top of the medal table at the African Armwrestling Championship in Accra.
The two-day competition, held from 1 to 2 May at the Borteyman Sports Complex, saw the host nation secure more than 150 medals, including dozens of golds.
The result highlights Ghana’s rapid rise in the sport, driven by sustained investment in athlete development and grassroots programmes led by the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF).
More than 350 athletes from over 20 countries took part, making it one of the largest and most competitive editions of the championship.
Officials say the performance cements Ghana’s status as one of Africa’s leading armwrestling nations and strengthens its ambition to compete at the highest global level.
The event also received a late financial boost of $45,000 from Adonko Next Level Energy Drink, which came on board as headline sponsor.
In addition to the funding, the company supplied more than 200 cartons of beverages for athletes, officials and spectators.
At a ceremony held in Accra ahead of the competition, GAF President Charles Osei Asibey described the sponsorship as “unprecedented” and said it would enhance both the organisation and visibility of the event.
Among those present were Daniel Azure, Senior Vice-President of Global Marketing at Next Level Energy Group, as well as the company’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Philip Grosse, and Chief Financial Officer, Frank Boekler.
Also in attendance were GAF Vice-President Dr Kofi Addo-Agyekum, who also serves as Vice-Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the 2026 championship, alongside representatives from the Armwrestling Federation of Africa and the World Armwrestling Federation.
The championship also served as a qualifier for the 2027 African Games in Cairo, with athletes competing for ranking points and continental honours.
Ghana will now look to build on its continental success as it seeks to establish itself as a force on the world stage.
