Ghana’s capital, Accra, has been hit by severe flooding after hours of heavy rainfall on Monday, disrupting transport, affecting schools and leaving some residents stranded.
Several major roads across the city have been submerged, with overflowing drains worsening conditions in a number of communities. Emergency services are carrying out rescue operations for people trapped in flooded homes, while authorities have urged residents in affected areas to remain cautious and follow safety instructions.
The Presidency has advised people to stay indoors if they are in a safe location and warned against attempting to cross flooded roads, either on foot or by vehicle. Residents whose homes are being affected by rising floodwaters have been urged to move to higher ground and call 112 for emergency assistance.
Motorists have been told to avoid flood-prone routes, including the Mallam–Kasoa Road, Alajo and Graphic Road areas, and to turn back if they encounter dangerous floodwaters.
Officials have also advised the public to unplug electrical appliances and avoid contact with electrical poles, transformers and fallen power lines.
The flooding has disrupted activities in some schools, prompting the government to encourage residents to stay home and work remotely where possible.
