Asantehemaa: The Queen Mother and her role in Asante tradition

The Asantehemaa, or Queen Mother, is one of the most important traditional leaders in the Asante Kingdom of Ghana.

She works with the Asantehene, the king of the Asante people, to protect customs, advise on important matters and support the people.

The Asantehemaa is a traditional ruler with her own authority and plays an important role in Asante leadership and culture.

On Monday, 6 July 2026, Nana Ama Bonsu was unveiled as the 15th Asantehemaa by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at Manhyia Palace. She succeeds Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who died in 2025.

The position of Asantehemaa has existed for centuries and remains an important part of the Asante Kingdom.

The Asante people follow a matrilineal system, meaning family and royal ties are traced through the mother’s side. This gives the Asantehemaa an important role in the traditional process of choosing a new Asantehene.

She takes part in identifying suitable royal candidates and works with other traditional authorities in the selection of a new king.

The Asantehemaa also advises the Asantehene on tradition, leadership and issues affecting the kingdom.

She helps preserve Asante culture by taking part in traditional ceremonies, festivals and important events. She also helps pass Asante history and values to younger generations.

As a senior female leader, the Asantehemaa plays an important role in matters affecting families, women and communities. The position has also been linked to efforts in peacebuilding, education and social development.

The role of the Asantehemaa reveals the important place women have held in Asante leadership for generations.
