Amaarae and Sarkodie to make acting debuts in Michaela Coel’s new HBO/BBC drama

Ghanaian music stars Amaarae and Sarkodie are set to make their acting debuts in a new television drama created by Michaela Coel.

The series, titled First Day on Earth, is being produced for HBO and BBC. It marks Coel’s first major project since her award-winning show I May Destroy You.

Amaarae, born Ama Serwah Genfi, will play the role of Nana, while Sarkodie, whose real name is Michael Owusu Addo, is set to appear as himself in the series.

The production features a strong Ghanaian ensemble, including Joselyn Dumas as Jessica, Akrobeto as Honam, Sister Deborah as Ama, Adjetey Anang as Edmund, Roselyn Ngissah as Eresi, and Akofa Edjeani as Athena, alongside Lady Jay.

International cast members include Bukky Bakray, Rakie Ayola, Ray BLK, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

First Day on Earth follows a British-Ghanaian novelist who returns to Ghana, where she is forced to confront questions about identity, belonging and personal history.

The project has drawn attention for its blend of global and Ghanaian talent, and for continuing Coel’s exploration of themes around identity and diaspora.

A release date has not yet been announced.
