Ghana Warns Citizens Against Non-Essential Travel to South Africa

The Government of Ghana has advised its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to South Africa due to a rise in xenophobic attacks against African migrants and foreign nationals.

In a statement issued on June 1, Ghana expressed concern over attacks by groups described as anti-immigrant vigilantes. The violence has reportedly led to injuries, looting, business closures, property damage, and losses for many African migrants.

The government said it has taken several steps, including:

-Filing diplomatic protests.

-Meeting with South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner in Accra.

-Petitioning the African Union.

-Assisting affected Ghanaians and supporting evacuation efforts.

Ghanaians currently in South Africa have been urged to stay in contact with the Ghana High Commission for assistance and updates.

Ghana also called on the South African government to improve security for vulnerable African communities and take stronger action to restore law and order.

Until further notice, the government advises all Ghanaians to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel to South Africa.
