Thomas Asare: Ghanaian appointed assistant secretary general of World Metrological Organisation

The World Metrological Organisation (WMO) has appointed Thomas Asare as an assistant secretary general which takes effect from Wednesday 1 May.

The WMO assistant secretary-general is responsible for ensuring the operation of the organisation’s overall corporate strategic direction and administration.

Thomas Asare has spearheaded and revitalized financial and operational management globally, collaborated with multi-constituency governance structures, engaged with governments, and partnered with international organizations.

His work centers around crafting and implementing crucial development strategies to alleviate poverty and improve the lives of the world’s most vulnerable population.

Since February 2015, Mr. Asare has been serving as the Comptroller and Director of the Division of Financial and Administrative Management at the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

In this role, he provides strategic guidance and oversight of the organization’s global financial management, fiduciary management, administrative services, and operational management.

Prior to joining UNICEF, Mr. Asare served as the Director of Programming, Budgeting, Finance, and Accounting at the African Union Commission, and as the Financial Controller of the African Union. Earlier in his career, he held key positions in financial management, program planning, management advisory, and assurance services.

During this time, he collaborated with various international development organizations across Africa and Asia, including the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). He also previously served as an Assistant Auditor-General of the Ghana Audit Service, the National Audit office of Ghana.

Mr. Asare studied Accountancy at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, in Ghana. He earned a Master of Science degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Northampton and a Master of Science in Audit and Consultancy from Birmingham City University in the United Kingdom.

He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). He also holds various additional certifications and memberships in Finance, Auditing, Risk Management, and Procurement.
