Ghanaian-American Adrian Boafo Wins Democratic Primary for U.S. Congress

Adrian Boafo has won the Democratic primary in Maryland’s 5th Congressional District, emerging from a crowded field of 24 candidates to become the frontrunner to represent the district in Congress.

The seat became available after Congressman Steny Hoyer announced his retirement. Hoyer first entered Congress in 1981 and served as House Majority Leader, making him one of the most influential political figures in Maryland history.

Boafo, a Maryland State Delegate from Bowie and the son of Ghanaian immigrants, earned endorsements from Hoyer, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, and U.S. Senator Angela Alsobrooks during the campaign.

Because Maryland’s 5th Congressional District strongly favors Democrats, his primary victory positions him as the favorite heading into the November general election.
