Ghanaian pop star Amaarae has delivered what many are calling a landmark moment for live music in the country, following her Blackout Concert held in Accra on 6 January.

The event, staged at The Underbridge Annex, marked the artist’s long-anticipated homecoming performance and the finale of her Blackstar tour. Fans and industry observers say the concert set a new standard for organisation, production quality and performance in Ghana’s live music scene.

Despite scepticism ahead of the show, the concert began and ended on schedule — a detail that drew praise from attendees and commentators alike. The carefully planned setlist, stage design and sound production reflected what some described as a “global-level” concert experience.

Audience members, many dressed in black in keeping with the concert’s theme, filled the venue and remained engaged throughout the night. DJ sets curated by iMullar Sound System warmed up the crowd before Amaarae took the stage.

The performance was further elevated by surprise appearances from leading Ghanaian artists, including Sarkodie, Gyakie, FTY, and members of the Asaakaa Boys, prompting loud reactions from fans.

The Blackout Concert was organised in partnership with iMullar Sound System and supported by several corporate sponsors, among them Access Bank, Ecobank Ghana, Hollard Insurance, Enterprise Insurance, Chale Ticketing App, and Republic Bar.

Music industry analysts say the success of the event could influence how concerts are planned and delivered in Ghana, with expectations now raised for professionalism, timing and audience experience.

For Amaarae, the night represented more than just a homecoming, it was a statement of intent, reinforcing her position as one of Ghana’s most influential contemporary artists.
