They were pushed all the way by South Africa in a game lacking in both chances and quality.
Stephen Eustáquio scored the winner for Canada in stoppage time with a precise strike from the edge of the box to see the co-hosts’ progress – and South Africa heading back home.
Canada will remain in the United States for their next match, where they will face either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston.
