Ofarnyi Kwegya is remembered in Moree as a legendary fisherman and an important figure in the coastal community’s history.
According to local tradition, he was a giant figure said to have connections to ancient Egypt, though these accounts remain part of oral history rather than documented historical records. A statue in Moree now honours his legacy and his connection to the community.
Oral accounts say that Ofarnyi Kwegya arrived in the area with Asebu Amanfi, another legendary figure described as a giant. Their group is associated with the traditional history of the Asebu people. While Asebu Amanfi is remembered as the founder of Asebu town, Ofarnyi Kwegya is said to have moved closer to the sea, where he became renowned for his fishing skills.
Local stories link his settlement in Moree to the abundance of stingrays in the surrounding waters, which is traditionally connected to the origin of the town’s name. Legend credits Ofarnyi Kwegya’s extraordinary size and strength with helping him catch large quantities of fish and become a celebrated figure among coastal communities.
The legend of Ofarnyi Kwegya is also connected to other fishing communities, including Winneba, where his name remains part of local heritage and storytelling traditions.
