A new cultural event celebrating African storytelling, music and heritage was launched on 2 August by The Velvet Hut and Dade Krama Studios with the maiden edition of A Gathering Under The Neem in Accra.
Held at The Velvet Hut in Labone, the event sought to recreate traditional African storytelling gatherings held under a tree, adapting the communal experience for a modern audience in an intimate studio setting.
The evening featured a live narration of the opening instalment of Amane Asesa—of Monsters and Gods, an epic fantasy work inspired by African mythology and history. The performance was delivered by voice artiste Mawuli Sachey, while the author, N.O.M. Tutu Ani, described the story as an expression of Africa telling its own narrative through its cultures, traditions and histories.
The programme also included live musical performances, a solo recital exploring themes of humanity and purpose, and a discussion moderated by columnist and insurance regulator Mawuli Zogbenu. Attendees also took part in a raffle, with copies of Amane Asesa—of Monsters and Gods given away as prizes.
Organisers said future editions of A Gathering Under The Neem will be announced in due course and will be held at different venues as they continue efforts to promote African storytelling and cultural expression.
