Nigerian teenager Jessica Oji has won gold in the women’s shot put at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
The 19-year-old produced a best throw of 18.08m to take the title, ahead of Ecuador’s Belsy Jenniffer Quiñonez, who threw 17.90m. Germany’s Emily Scherf took bronze with 17.23m.
Oji’s victory makes her the first Nigerian to win a World U20 title in a field event, a landmark achievement in the 40-year history of the championships.
Her success comes nine days after she won Commonwealth silver, adding a second major international medal to a memorable period in her young career.
