The 2022 edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, based on universities’ contributions towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has ranked Ashesi first in Ghana.
Ashesi was also ranked seventh in Africa and among the world’s top 300 most impactful universities.
The Impact Rankings which started in 2019 are based on more than 100 metrics and over 200 measurements covering teaching, research, and community outreach; and highlight how universities are moving the world towards the achievement of the 17 SDGs.
Out of 1,524 institutions worldwide, 80 universities from 10 African nations are listed in the 2022 Impact Rankings, demonstrating the growing importance of the SDGs inside African higher education institutions.
The only Ghanaian universities in the top 10 are Ashesi University and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which are placed second and eighth respectively in Ghana and Africa.
The two are also the only Ghanaian universities in the world’s top 300.
Other Ghanaian universities accepted to the 2022 list, in order of ranking, were the University of Ghana, University of Health and Allied Sciences, University of Professional Studies, Accra, and Academic City University College.
Based on the University’s strong focus on social progress, giving access to students from all backgrounds, and advancing students up the income ladder, Ashesi achieved the highest ratings in contributions to the SDG 1 Goal of No Poverty.
Ashesi also received strong ratings in contributions to SDG 4 (Gender Equality), SDG7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals).
“As the Impact Rankings focus on social and economic impact through universities’ contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals, we can recognize niche strengths and uncover real pockets of excellence across the African continent,” said Chief Knowledge Officer at THE World University Rankings, Phil Baty, in a briefing for University World News.
