Ghana receives new train assembled in Poland for Tema-Mpakadan line

Ghana has received the first batch of 12 state-of-the-art trains assembled in Poland, marking a significant development for the country’s transportation sector.

The trains, designed for the Tema-Mpakadan standard-gauge railway line, will transport passengers from Mpakadan through Kpong, Juapong, Doryumu all the way to Tema port and then the passengers can switch from the standard-guage line to a narrow-gauge line to take them all the way to the heart of Accra.

The Tema-Mpakadan railway is part of a larger 1000 km Ghana-Burkina Faso interconnectivity project.

The handover ceremony took place in Poland on February 2, 2024, with the CEO of the Ghana Railways Development Authority expressing the importance of a vibrant railway system for the country’s industrialization agenda.

The first train is expected to arrive in Ghana by March 2024, undergo testing, and be commissioned by the President in June 2024.

The procurement of these modern trains is part of a larger contract with the Polish manufacturer, PESA, reflecting Ghana’s commitment to enhancing rail network efficiency and capacity.
